Many people with diabetes do not notice any symptoms, leading them to believe they are well. Because the signs and symptoms can be mild, diabetics frequently go undiagnosed until complications arise. When present, the signs and symptoms of diabetes are generally related to hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia. Hyperglycemia is blood sugar that is too high. Hypoglycemia is blood sugar that is too low.
General Symptoms of Hyperglycemia
- Extreme thirst
- Increased urination, especially at night
- Increased hunger
- Wounds that heal slowly or will not heal
- Blurred vision
- Weight loss
General Symptoms of Hypoglycemia
- Anxiety or feeling shaky
- Rapid heart beat
- Confusion or personality changes
- Sweating
- Fainting
