About Your Diabetes > What Problems can Diabetes Cause?

When blood sugar remains too high and number of changes occur in the body. Depending on how high blood sugar levels remain and for how long, these changes can cause very serious problems, or "complications." In the United States, more than 200,000 persons die each year from complications of diabetes. However, many of these problems can be prevented.

Possible Complications of Diabetes

  • Heart Disease
  • Nerve and Blood Vessel Damage
  • Kidney Disease
  • Blindness
  • Frequent infections, poor wound healing
  • Amputations
