III. Transfers
B. Transfer Devices
8. Transfer from/to a car
For many older adults have difficulty getting in and out of the car. They may hold onto parts of the car such as, the steering wheel, door frame, and window or grasp onto another person. Lower extremity weakness, arthritis or other chronic conditions make it very difficult to transfer out of the car.
The Car Caddie is a new device on the market to help with this activity. It is a portable device that can be installed onto the car's window frame. It consists of an adjustable strap that is wrapped around the car's window frame and snapped into a buckle to secure it in place. The length of the handle can be adjusted to accommodate for the user's height and range of motion. Then roll the window up against the strap. Its handle is soft and easy to grasp onto. Instead of grasping the door frame or steering wheel, the handle is in position for that added leverage needed to initiate standing or guide sitting.
A word of caution: This device is not made to accommodate for the person's full weight. It is strictly used as an assistive device to aid standing or sitting.
