B. Transfer Devices

3. Pivot Disk

Pivoting during transfers can be very problematic for some individuals. A turntable-style disk can help those who are able to stand, but are unable to turn or shift their feet around to pivot. The caregiver turns the care recipient body gently in the direction needed for transfer to the right or left. The care recipient stabilizes the disk from moving with his/her foot while the care recipient initiates standing. The care recipient must be able to bear weight in order to use this device.

Some individuals cannot bear weight on their legs or are too unstable to complete a standing transfer. These individuals are best suited for seated-sliding transfers. If a caregiver is sliding the person across the board, it is important to remember to go slow, because some people may complain of dizziness if movement occurs too fast.
