III. Transfers

B. Transfer Devices

1. Gait belts

Gait belts (as commonly known as transfer belts) are used as an added safety device to use when transferring care recipients. The care giver is able to guide the care recipient when transferring. The gait belt provides a secure grip on the individual without holding onto the individual's clothing. The gait belt should fit comfortably around the person's waist leaving just enough space for the care giver to get their fingers in under the belt. Take care when placing a gait belt around large women. Make sure that their breasts are not being pinched.
