Study Modules > Module I: Overview

In Module I, background information regarding assistive technology, aging and their relationship are addressed. The aging demographics in the U.S., the aging process of the older adult and its effect on functional performance, research findings on aging and assistive technology will be discussed. Assistive technology is examined from the viewpoint of matching the device to the person in order to perform specific activities. Psychosocial issues are addressed concerning whether a person accepts or rejects assistive technology. A glossary of terms related to assistive technology, home modification and universal design, care giving are discussed. Assistive technology can be characterized in several categories. These distinctions will be discussed.

Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to:

  • describe the elderly population’s demographics, diversity and occurrence of disability
  • define caregiver and the role of the caregiver
  • define assistive technology and assistive technology services
  • describe the various categories of assistive technology
  • demonstrate an understanding of assistive technology and it relationship to care giving, independence, and quality of life.
  • discuss the principles of design
  • recognize psychosocial issues related to the use of assistive technology
  • select and recommend appropriate assistive technology and home modification interventions
  • identify barriers to assistive technology use and non-use
  • introduce assistive technology to informal caregivers and care recipients
  • identify key points in the selection of assistive technology
  • identify the steps to funding technology and funding sources

Note : Each module has a lot of information about the each activity and the various options for assistive technology. You may choose to skip certain sections that you are familiar with. Please do review the short quiz given at the end of each module, which will help you take the final test for continuing education.
